It was so named to warn later mariners of dangerous coral reefs off the coast. For his trouble the Captain Cook Memorial was built here 200 years later. You wouldn’t know to look at it, (I didn’t and I was there) but the memorial is in fact a lighthouse. The memorial lighthouse also marks the state border between the Gold Coast, Queensland & Tweed Heads, New South Wales.
